The Gleanings-XI PART-2 PREGNANCY & LACTATION (FEMALE GENITALIA)
Dr. M. A. USMANI
[In the present situation writing a chapter on homeopathic care of pregnancy seems to be redundant. The obstetric science and the maternity practice has so advanced that no niche has been left for homeopathy. And the people have accepted it. In the urban population, in every country, no pregnant woman thinks of going to a homeopath for advice and treatment of ailments incidental to pregnancy. They, as routine, get themselves registered with the maternity department of a hospital, or a maternity home. These homes have their definitive procedure and settled routine to cater these patients
A good long part of rubrics concerning the complications of fetal growth and intricacies of labor have fallen to disuse as redundant. Homeopathy cannot vie here. And we should not have any grudge for that. This is an advancement of science; and everybody should welcome it. Many pathological conditions that used to be common occurrences have become the relics of the midwifery of yore. Puerperal convulsions and eclampsia are no more problems now. These and such complicacies are forestalled and therapeutically precluded in modern maternity practice.
But the malpractices in the garb of advancement of science should be guarded by vigilant and knowledgeable homeopaths. Unnecessary C-Sections, and perineal tears, and many such practices should be examined. The beauty and benefits of natural birth cannot be equated with surgical procedures, which lead to physical maiming and devastation, and life-long crippling effect. The abiding pain at the site of the epidural injection can give a lifelong backache.
Homeopaths have an important role to play during the ante-natal period. They can help save the expectant mother from nausea, vomiting, anorexia, insomnia, phobias, depressions, funks and countless other ailments incidental to this period. Homeopathy has always excelled in this field and will always excel and shine.
The most important role that was given to a homeopathic physician by the old sage, Hahnemann, was to miasmatically treat the expectant mother. This is the time, as Hahnemann has pointed out, to free the mother and the child, from the miasma of the ages. One should carefully and distinctly determine the chronic miasm of the pregnant mother, and give the anti-miasmatic shots, interspersely.
Select, e.g., from psoric medicines, for the enceinte, who used to have scanty, late menses with lot of pain; and bland leucorrhea, among other general psoric symptoms. And a preparation of Tuberculinum for a woman, who used to have copious, prolonged and bright red menses; with other complications occurring during this period, as diarrhea or constipation, before or during menses. The leucorrhea of such patients is purulent, yellow, lumpy, and of disagreeable odor. The labor of such patients is difficult, tiring and prolonged. There would also be habitual abortion. In Sycotic patients the pains would be spasmodic and colicky; the flow acrid, excoriating and fishy in smell. The leucorrhea would be dirty green, burning, and excoriating, and same smell. There would also be pelvic pathologies as tumors and ovarian cysts. Pelvic cancers and habitual abortions, and mal-formation of fetuses, should be considered Syphilitic.
More about this sometimes in future. I’ve avoided discussing the labor rubrics for the evident and above-mentioned reasons. ---MAU]
FECUNDITY & FERTILITY
Sterility, Infertility: Obstinate Cases: Natrum Carb.
In obstinate cases of sterility study Nat-c. (T.K. Moor)

Tendency to Abortion, from Non-development of Uterus: Plumbum
Plb. tends to produce non development of uterus; we may, therefore, find it indicated in cases of tendency to abortion. The fetus in utero increases in size, but the muscular fibers of the uterus do not develop in proportion, hence the uterus is no longer able to accommodate the growing fetus, and thus the abortion ensues. (CMM p. 622)

Abortifacient & Ecbolic : Cimicifuga
Actea Racemosa “produces miscarriage without the inflammatory irritation of Sabina, and excites in labor less unremitting contraction than Secale. (Hughes, Pharmacodynamics)
Pseudocyesis (False Conception)
Nat-c.: It is one of the remedies useful for expelling moles or the products of a false conception.
SABADILLA: useful in imaginary diseases, e.g. the patient imagines that she is pregnant, when really she is swollen from flatus.

Accompanied by varicose veins of the legs. Hunger is particularly manifested towards noon. Bitter taste which is referred by the patient to the fauces. As soon as the spoonful of water reaches the stomach, it is ejected. (CMM) (Read also Conium)
Toothache during Pregnancy: Mag.Carb.
Pains worse at night and force the patient to get up and walk about. Ratanhia has the same modalities. Chamomilla is complementary to Mag.Carb. Some think that Sepia is the specific for toothache of pregnancy. (CMM)
Vomiting of Pregnancy: Cerium Ox.
Spasmodic reflex vomiting, (and spasmodic cough). Vomiting of half digested food.
INGLUVIN: Vomiting of pregnancy and gastric neurasthenia. (Boericke)
Vomiting of Pregnancy: Throid., Lac.Def.
Vomiting of Preg. with Deathly Nausea: Tabacum
Pallor and coldness with cold sweat.
Nausea and Vomiting from Odor of Food: Stannum
The Stannum patient is troubled with disordered digestion, otherwise called dyspepsia. There are nausea and vomiting in the morning as in Colchicum. The odor of the cooking causes vomiting. This last symptom is particularly is strong indication for Stannum, especially for women. There is a weak gone feeling in the stomach, as in Sepia; also bitter taste in the mouth. The rectum is inactive. Much urging is required to evacuate even a soft stool. Face pale and sunken. (CMM)

Pelvic Congestion with Hemorrhoids, especially in Later Months: Coll.
Rigid Os: Verat.v., ( Comp. Bell., Gels.)
Pressure of the child on some of the nerves in the pelvis, or against an undilating os, causes spasms. [Similarly it is indicated where some indigestible substance, in the stomach produces convulsions.] (CMM p. 713)
Puerperal Convulsions: Glonoine
An admirable remedy for convulsions coming on during labor. The face is bright red and puffed, the pulse is full and hard, and the urine albuminous. The patient froths at the mouth, unconscious. (Also best for congestion of the head from suppressed menses.) (CMM 437) Compare Glonoin with

Belladonna: Symptoms violent. Area of redness spread out in radii from the central point of inflammation.

Sensitiveness to Coitus: Platinum
Other remedies: Sepia, Belladonna (from dry vagina);
Kreosote: (When followed by Bloody flow);

FEMALE SYMPTOMS IN REMEDIES:
Bearing down in uterine region. Menses are black and pitch like, and are accompanied by pain in back when walking, and in the thigh when sitting. She has also leucorrhea after every stool, or following the uterine spasms. With all these symptoms there is always the Mag.Mur. constipation, in which the stools are passed with great difficulty, being composed of hard lumps, or they are so dry that they crumble at the anus. If one finds that symptom with the uterine symptoms, one may be sure that Mag. Mur. would help. (CMM)
1) Bearing Down: There is a pressure across the hypogastrium, as if something were being pushed out. On examination in such cases one finds the os uteri indurated and misshapen. There is considerable congestion of a pressive kind in the uterus, causing pulsation there during and after coitus. The extra influx of blood caused by sexual erethism brigs about this pulsation.
2) Leucorrhea: which Nat.c. causes is thick, yellow, and sometimes has a putrid odor. Increases after coition, and ceases after urination.
3) Weak labor pains: which cause a great deal of anguish, tremors and perspiration with every pain, and are relieved by gentle rubbing, which, by the way is a general characteristic.
4) Expulsion of Moles or the product of False Conception: Nat.c. is one of the remedies useful for this purpose. (CMM 694f)
