Creating Waves of Awareness
Once, a little girl with a severe congenital defect consulted me for the treatment of some acute infection. During case taking, she pointing at my stethoscope, and somehow whispered in a low pitched voice (due to her defect): “Will you please give me this when you purchase a new one? Because I want to be a doctor!” Might be due to my sympathy to a girl with severe birth defect, I gave my old stethoscope to her. But I was little doubtful that she may not be able to go for higher studies. After a few months, her family shifted to another place, after that I had no contact with her family for several years.
A few months back, she visited me with her parents. Her congenital defects are almost gone after a series of surgeries done by a team of experts. What made me happy is she is going to be a doctor within a few years, and interested to be a plastic surgeon, to help the children with similar defects she had. And she told me while going back - I still have your stethoscope that really encouraged me to be a doctor.
