Sialotherapy

Sialotherapy is a treatment of diseases with the saliva. I first read this term in Dr. Andrés Amado Zuno Arce’s blog on the HWC. The terms sialolith or Sialolithiasis, were known to me, meaning the formation of concretions in the salivary gland and ducts. These are periodically shed in the mouth, in the form of various shaped little stones. A patient of mine, a lady, in her fifties, kept bringing such concretions, to show me, having escaped from the salivary ducts under her tongue. I even palpated more such concretions under her tongue.

The meaning of Sialotherapy brought to my mind my own traumatic experience of childhood. I contracted a sore on the dorsum of my nose, when I might be five to six year old. I became the victim of this uncouth and abominable treatment, by a very clumsy and large limbed woman with dirty black teeth, with denuded roots. She would come every morning, mutter some abracadabra in her mouth, and would either spit her very foul smelling saliva on the ulcer, or taking it on her fingers and apply on the wound. The offensive, nauseating smell would haunt me the whole day. I have acute sense of smell by birth. It was mortification for me, simple and pure. The ulcer had started advancing towards the cheeks. A surgeon was called in who treated it for quite some time.

Sialotherapy and many other such therapies, as urine therapy, had been the folklore treatments, in the Magic Age, in the human history. Sir James George Frazer in his multi volumes gigantic work: The Golden Bough, has described many such practices along with magic rituals. The history of human civilization is very bewitching, but tiresomely slow: the inertia and sloth of false beliefs and rituals restraining to accept any new knowledge or new ideas. Frazer is an enlightening and very informing study, enriching many great minds, of his times and the posterity.

Sialotherapy, to say the least, is not an alternative treatment or therapy; it is the history of therapeutics, or better say the history of medicine, which has now fallen to oblivion since long. These (sialotherapy and Urine therapy, etc.) violate the civilized taste, and are downright crude, and scientifically quite untenable. The old lady, described above, who treated me, would have wrought havoc with my health with her so polluted and laden with pathologic germs saliva. Or, Dr. Zuno’s sort of nebulization of the asthmatic children with the diluted saliva, collected by, but let me quote him: “take a little water in the mouth and mix it with the saliva of waking in the morning and then pour it in a Petri dish or a glass or a porcelain cup, not plastic, trying that the salivary glands are almost completely emptied in one act. One adds a little water to saliva so it can flow better because in its natural form is very thick;” and instilling it into a spray bottle for the inhalation by the pneumonic or the asthmatic patients, would play the same havoc, in spite of the praises that Zuno showers upon its ‘curative’ efficacy. It is everybody’s imagination: how the modern state of art and the fine sensibilities would ever accept and allow this!

Saliva can be intensely infective agent with countless oral bacteria and germs. There can be decaying molars, oral ulcers, even malignant ulcers, and canker oris. Here Dr. Zuno’s sterilization with ultra-violet rays won’t help. Moreover UV rays’ disinfection process is very recent concept and discovery. When sialotherapy came into existence there was neither germ theory nor any knowledge of bacteria. And saliva was not used as saliva, but as a magic medium. Every secretion or excretion of the body was taboo bound. And every healing activity was as if magical. The healer would mutter magical incantations before applying the saliva. Frazer’s volumes shed great light on this stage of history. Such arguments, as animals in nature lick their wounds, is a trite argument, amply proven to be faulty, and counterproductive, and sometimes generating new strains of infection.

Urine therapy, as compared with saliva therapy, seams to be more relevant, as it is still practiced in many parts of the world. Especially in India it is, and has been, practiced in many parts of the country. If not ones own urine, it could be of the cow, which they take as sacred. A prime minister of India, viz. Morarji Desai, drank his own morning urine, his whole life; and he lived to be 99. Read his one hour’s interview with ABC here.

  • He said that urine was panacea for all diseases, ‘even for the cataract, if the eyes are washed with it’. He further proclaimed that urine therapy is a “perfect” treatment for the millions of Indians who could not afford professional care at that time.

After circumcision of a child, the doctor usually instructs not to change the dressing of the wound, ‘let the child freely urinate on or in the bandage’, he says. And it usually works, which betrays the healing values of the urine. In spite of all instances favoring urine’s therapeutic value, good sense and fine taste feels reluctant in using this agent for any such purposes, and in modes prescribed.

Even Homeopathy has gathered much superfluous mass along the years it has been rolling down the history. Radiesthesia, Auto-hemo Therapy, Isopathy, Electro-Homeopathy, Bach’s Flower Remedies, Shuessler’s Biochemistry (which he originally baptized as Abridged Homeopathy). But Homeopathy, pure and simple, stands out as immutable as ever, a pillar of light guiding the humanity.

Note to Dr. Zuno:

  • ‘Dear Doctor I’ve written what I instinctively felt and practically experienced. Intention was never to hurt you: such a sweet personality that you are! After reading your mail I instructed many of my patients, the rheumatico-arthritic ones especially, to rub their own saliva on their ailing joints, at least three times daily. Few of them did not obey and the ones who did, didn’t bring any happy tidings either. My habit, dear Doctor, is to accept only that is scientific and logical, all else I relegate to limbo of faith, and man’s gullibility.

Dear Dr. M. A. (“M. A.” is not a name. What is yours? ¿Why don’t you publish it? Why you hide it?) First of all I want to express my sadness and my compassion for you horrible experience with that not clean lady, her dirty saliva and your nose injury. We all can imagine the trauma it could leave in your memory and maybe in your sub consciousness, something you show in your publication I am referring to. What an ugly experience!! Please, go ahead and try to see other picture, the good side of sialotherapy… You will find a marvelous field of applications for you, your beloved ones and your patients. (Please write to this lady a homeopath from Pakistan also: "abida khan" <abida538@hotmail.com>, "abida rauf khan khan" <abidahabibkhan@gmail.com>, and she will let you know about some astonishing experiences with saliva healing properties in herself and her patients)

Also, I kindly ask you please read carefully; I am not a Dr. but an Associate professor of a famous Homeopathy University, de Argentinean Candegabe, an Honorius cause-degree because my struggle in favor of homeopathy and my books I published already in which I expose new ideas about how homeoremedies actually work. (Any one can find the new, the 3th edition of “Homeopathy and informatics” in librosdehomeopatia.es (http://librosdehomeopatia.es/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/HOMEO-E-INF...) It has a commentary made by the Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Márquez about my intellectual honesty, something you put in a doubly position)

Also I want to thank you because your publication opens up a door for me to defend sialotherapy against misconceptions like yours. And I am not alone: those giants of medicine I mention later on here stand before me. I am their new today voice and I stand upon their shoulders, so it is not my world against yours but yours vs. theirs and mine. Also there are science institutions in our favor and support us. You will read about those later on if you want so.

Now, you came to a too soon conclusion-verdict-judgment, a pre judgment actually: “Sialotherapy, to say the least, is not an alternative treatment or therapy;” and if you see closely you base your words in your personal bad experience (I’m sorry for that) with sialotherapy and a few other ones which I’m sure are not reliable.

Also you say: “Sialotherapy and many other such therapies, as urine therapy, had been the folklore treatments” but you do not understand that it was taught in the very first medicine school in the medicine history, Salerno, Italy, something I already published here.  (http://mx.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071128165801AAWvbLR. At the same http://www.nlm.nih.gov/hmd/medieval/salerno.html) time you discard the words of those giants of medicine like Aristotle, Celsus, Galen, Hippocrates, Maimonides, Pliny, Paracelsus and tenths more of them… Seneca, Juvenal, Theophr, Paulus Aegineta, Oribasius… (http://www.jstor.org/pss/1260235) not so famous who extensively wrote and said: “Saliva heals”

Now, here are the today scientific bases of sialotherapy: in the Pasteur famous research institute (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, vol 103, p 17979 http://www.pasteur.fr/ip/easysite/pasteur/en/research/scientific-de...) they found a hormone up to 6 times stronger than morphine. That’s the reason all of us lick our injuries in our hands: all of us. Really, saliva is the only medicine everybody uses or used ones in a while. And you say!: “Urine therapy, as compared with saliva therapy, seams (sic) to be more relevant, as it is still practiced in many parts of the world.”

Science people at the “Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC)” discovered that in saliva there are elements that can conquer leishmaniasis.”

NEW SCIENTIST: Stimulating the superficial pain receptors lessens the return of deep pain receptors to the brain, hence licking a wound would help ease the pain. This is the basis of TNS (transcutaneous neural stimulation. http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/TNS) pain control.
Rubbing nettle stings with dock leaves is the same principle as is the much nicer kiss it better. http://www.newscientist.com/blog/lastword/2007/09/wound-licking.html

In the Amsterdam University (http://www.fasebj.org/content/22/11/3805.abstract?sid=4108fdf7-bc8d... Histatins are the major wound-closure stimulating factors in human saliva as identified in a cell culture assay) they found that histatin, a protein one find in saliva, is one of the reasons mouth injuries heal 5 times faster than other ones. And this is the reason why saliva can restore the health of damaged air ways in respiratory tract. And you say: “…and instilling it into a spray bottle for the inhalation by the pneumonic or the asthmatic patients, would play the same havoc, in spite of the praises that Zuno showers upon its ‘curative’ efficacy. It is everybody’s imagination: how the modern state of art and the fine sensibilities would ever accept and allow this!!!” Dr. Usmani: what can we do if the science behind this cell-tissue regeneration process is not understood? Again, here is an example (My example, not about “children” as you wrote saying that that is what I mention. Please read carefully) Dr. Manuel Eduardo Calderón González, UNAM, “Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México” born, 10/10/43, Phone Cel. 33.10.90.04.41, (Dr. “M. A.”: you can call him up) Guadalajara, México, smoking since he was 13 years old, suffering from asthma and emphysema, has been inhaling his saliva previously sterilized with ultraviolet rays. The aim is the regeneration of damaged tissue of the respiratory tract.

We talked before starting with the experiment. He knows and you too the fact that saliva contains proteins that regenerate tissues of the mouth dramatically fast (The Amsterdam University research proofs it) This fact convinced him of such a possibility; tissue regeneration of the airways with the proteins of saliva, something that is actually happening.

More science behind sialotherapy: “Saliva#Disinfectants

Oral mucosa heals faster than skin,[2] suggesting that saliva may have properties that aid wound healing. Saliva contains many compounds that are antibacterial or promote healing. The enzymes lysozyme and peroxidase,[3] lactoferrin,[4]defensins,[5] cystatins and an antibodyIgA,[6] are all antibacterial. Thrombospondin and some other components are antiviral.[7][8] A protease inhibitorsecretory leukocyte protease inhibitor, is present in saliva and is both antibacterial and antiviral, and a promoter of wound healing.[9][10] Nitratesthat are naturally found in saliva break down into nitric oxideon contact with skin, which will inhibit bacterial growth.[11]Saliva contains growth factors[12] such as epidermal growth factor,[13] VEGF,[14] TGF-β1,[15] leptin,[16][17] IGF-I,[18][19]lysophosphatidic acid,[20][21] hyaluronan[22] andNGF,[23][24][25] which all promote healing, although levels ofEGF and NGF in humans are much lower than those in rats. In humans, histatins may play a larger role.[26][27] As well as being growth factors, IGF-I and TGF-α induce antimicrobial peptides.[28] Saliva also contains an analgesicopiorphin.[29]Licking will also tend to debride the wound and remove gross contamination from the affected area.”

In a study managed by Dr. Nigel Benjamin of the St. Bartholomew’s and Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry was found that saliva has a lot of nitrates which explains the bactericide power of saliva” http://www.springerlink.com/content/n2v7418155h00472/

In the number one college of the world, in Harvard they found antibiotics in saliva. The # 1 University of the Planet! And you say there are no scientific bases.

In “The Journal of Biological Chemistry”, Vol. 237, No. 5, May 1962, one find “Isolation of a Mouse Sbmaxillary Gland Acclerating Incisor Eruption and Eyelid Opening in the New-born Animal” Stanley Cohen, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. http://www.jbc.org/cgi/reprint/237/5/1555

Now, saliva has the power to heal a lot of conditions (In my book http://d.yimg.com/kq/groups/17282019/242251634/name/Qu%C3%A9+cura+l... first edition, now in its 5°,  one may find thousands of testimonies about those possibilities, the most powerful ones coming from Galen, Hippocrates, and tenths of honorable and respectful medicine men, like those I mentioned; Hippocrates –homeopathic law of similar- and Galen, who are the founders of the modern occidental medicine!) and which allow me to think it has a homeopathic effect when it comes out of the mouth cavity. When this happens it changes its structure because the difference of temperature, the chemical influence of air gasses, etc., and becomes a similar and ends to be an equal, a same. So it could be the extreme simílimum at the same time. I say this because conditions inside the mouth do not get the healing effect of saliva, but when it comes out, it can heal sores if one puts it in a finger tip, take it out of the mouth and then apply it on the sore. A number of experiences of this kind I have had and some other too came to my knowledge from a few people, some doctors, by the way.
About dog’s saliva healing properties, in the “Universidad de Santader UDES,( http://www.rcnradio.com/audios/las-propiedades-curativas-de-l-125897) they found that yes, it heals.

http://www.fasebj.org/content/22/11/3805.abstract?sid=4108fdf7-bc8d...

Also, you deny the well known scientific based bactericide efficiency of UV when you say: “Saliva can be intensely infective agent with countless oral bacteria and germs. (Do you need to count bacteria to be possible to eliminate it, and only if one find a few it is possible to do that sterilization? A. A. Z. A.) There can be decaying molars, oral ulcers, even malignant ulcers, and canker oris. Here Dr. Zuno’s sterilization with ultra-violet rays won’t help” No science in this your words: at all.

You say: “When sialotherapy came into existence there was neither germ theory nor any knowledge of bacteria. And saliva was not used as saliva, but as a magic medium.” Here because your hurry to “judge” you ignored that it was taught in the first school of medicine of occident, in Salerno Italy and those scientific bases I mentioned earlier.

“These (sialotherapy and Urine therapy, etc.) violate the civilized taste, and are downright crude, and scientifically quite untenable.” Sorry: the science that supports sialotherapy is sound, firm, solid and exposed already: Institute Pasteur, Amsterdam U.; Harvard and more.

And you previously published this: “Pray, kindly tell me how the saliva could ever be inhaled...” And I ask you: Is praying a science valuable measure? Wrong again.

“When sialotherapy came into existence there was neither germ theory nor any knowledge of bacteria”. This line has no logical development, structure; out of contest.

“And saliva was not used as saliva, but as a magic medium” Wrong again: do animal use it as a magical medium? During millions of years we were like animals, we used to live in caves, like animals with no medicines, no doctors and we had no more to use than…saliva! and plants. Orangutans and chimps use plants which they chew and when the vegetable is full of saliva they apply it to the skin for healing purposes.

As anyone can see these are pre judgments:  “When sialotherapy came into existence there was neither germ theory nor any knowledge of bacteria. And saliva was not used as saliva, but as a magic medium”

At the end you come up with these words: “Note to Dr. Zuno:

‘Dear Doctor I’ve written what I instinctively felt..” Are “feelings” scientifically valuable arguments? no, not at all. And if they are “instinctively” reached, the scientifically possible value disappears completely. You ad: “My habit, dear Doctor, is to accept only that is scientific and logical, all else I relegate to limbo of faith, and man’s gullibility. Usmani.” Here in this document you can see the science behind sialotherapy.

(I have no reason to treat the urine business)

Dr. Usmani: when I doubt about the science behind some topic I first ask: what are the scientific bases you have to say that? In this way I learn new knowledge and stop to say nonsense.

But there is something that makes me think you are wrong because your personal bad experience (Sorry about that!!) and you created a “Sialotherapy” page here in HWC, only with a negative purpose! “Sialotherapy

I kindly ask you to take of the horrible picture you posted about “Sialotherapy” because it makes no sense. It is suppose to show “countless oral bacteria and germs” but it really do not show that.

Finally, I invite you to see in facebook a large number of new experiences of sialotherapy from India, Pakistan, Brasil, Guatemala, Argentina, México and more, here: “Sialoterapia Sialotherapy” http://www.facebook.com/groups/256374141150377/?fref=ts
