Creating Waves of Awareness
Before you check the BP, better feel and compare the radial pulse in both right and left hands. If you feel any significant difference in the pulse in terms of volume, don’t hesitation to check BP in both hands. If there is a huge difference between the systolic BP of right and left hands (more than 10 mmHg), it is mandatory to rule out narrowing of carotid or subclavian arteries due to various conditions like atherosclerosis, thrombosis, arterial disease, etc. So, refer the patient for Doppler Ultrasound of the neck vessels. Also there is increased risk of stroke, heart disease in those who have significant difference in right and left hand blood pressure.
