Gout and Homeopathy

What is Gout? In recent days, American TV has been showing a lot of advertisements about gout and uric acid. These commercials show an obese man carrying a beaker of green liquid, of course uric acid.

In one of the graphics shows the anatomy of the feet and how crystals get deposited in the joints resulting in a disease what is termed gout. The image is accompanied by the advertisement of some medicine with all its glorified benefits and its list of side effects.

This is a good time to talk about gout and what homeopathy can do in this field.

WHAT IS GOUT: Its a kind of arthritis, that occurs when uric acid builds up in blood and causes joint inflammation. It is known as Podagra when the big toe is involved.

ACUTE GOUT: Acute gout is a painful condition when it affects a single joint.

CHRONIC GOUT: It is repeated episode of pain and inflammation, which may involve more than one joint.

CAUSES OF GOUT: High level of uric acid in the blood, which could be due to higher production of the acid in the body. Certain amounts of uric acid are normal in the blood stream. Chronic gout can also be due to one's body not getting rid of the extra acid in blood.

The build up of large amounts of uric acid around the joints (Synovial fluid) results in the formation of crystals, which cause joint to swell up and become inflamed. This is a very painful condition and some times even a touch can become unbearable.

The exact condition reasons are unknown, but it can be genetic, and is more common in men than women (after menopause). Gout is also known to be more prevalent in people who consume alcohol and meat.

The following category of people are more under risk of getting gout.

Those suffering from diabetes, kidney disease, obesity, sickle cell anemia and leukemia.

SYMPTOMS: Acute gout can occur in one or more joint. The big toe, knee, or ankle joints are most vulnerable.

Excruciating pain may start suddenly as a throbbing.

The joints usually look red and are warm to the touch. They are tender to touch even a blanket or cover may hurt.

Fever may accompany the pain and swelling.

The symptoms may go away after first attack, but in half the patients they return.

Those with chronic arthritis /gout, may develop joint damage and may suffer impairment of motion in joints. The patient will suffer with this most of the time.

If the patient has had the disease for many years he may develop a lump below the skin around the joints. It drains chalky material called TOPHI.

LIFE STYLE CHANGES

Changing one's life style with exercise (I endorse yoga) and healthy food habits can reduce the pain and the arthritic condition to manageable level.

Avoid alcohol.

Reduce purine rich food.

Reduce your meat intake.

Avoid fatty food – salad dressing, fried food, ice cream.

Eat enough carbohydrates.

It should be noted if you are trying to loose lose weight, it should be at a slow pace. Quick weight loss may cause stone formation due uric acid in kidneys.

HOMEOPATHY TO THE RESCUE

Now I would like to say that homeopathy has proved time and again that when used to treat gout and arthritis it has proved extremely effective. That of course requires a skillful homeopathic prescribing at the hand of a qualified and experienced doctor.

The medicine that have often proved affective are as follows though there will be others also.

BRY, PULS, LYC, URTICA URENS, BERBERIS VULGARIS, LEDUM PAL, COLCHICUM, FORMICA RUFA, GUAIACUM, ACID BENZOIC, RHUS TOX

Some detail of a few medicine with respect to gout and arthritis are as follows.

LEDUM: Gout of great toe and joints with swelling, soreness, and drawing pain on stepping, worse in warmth, pressure and motion. Pain travels upwards, better by cold compress.

GUAIACUM: Gouty nodosities of joints, feeling of heat in affected limbs, tearing pain in extremities and contraction of the muscles.

ACID BENZ: Gouty complaints with offensive urine.

PICRIC ACID: Arthritic deformans, chronic rheumatoid, particularly of fingers.

LYCOPODIUM: When there is red sand in urine in gouty patients.

BERBERIS VULGARIS: Pain in heels, better by putting most of the weight on them.

URTICA URENS: “ Almost specific for gout- to drain out uric acid and urates”

It will be appreciated if readers and HWC members can share their clinical experiences for benefit of all.

Dear Dr Wequar ~ This year a friend with gout asked for help. He recovered from very severe chronic symptoms, for which he had been taking antibiotics, that cleared up amazingly well with Sulphur 6C [a remedy not on your list]. So, always take the case to determine the best remedy for each individual.

Thanks for the post.

Nowadays we get many gout cases with normal uric acid levels in the blood. Hence, the patients do not give much importance to the diet restrictions. It proves that even before the appearance of pathology in the blood, the local manifestation may appear. The location affinity of the disease is also important (Metatarso-Phalangeal Joint ot the Great Toe). Similarly we have remedies with same location affinity, for example Ledum pal.
