Clinical Use Of Asafoetida Thanks To Grandgeorge

Was it not for Grandgeorge, then I would never had thought to use asa foetida for vesicoureteral reflux in infants.

"Reversed peristalsis" alone would not have brought me on this idea.

I have seen cases being healed, even in severe degrees of reflux, by giving asa foetida D6 for many months [doubtful if they would be healed spontaneously, as urologists insisted on operations as the only solution.]

Instead of antibiotic prophylaxis, I have prescribed in most cases mannose. I, also, often use it clinically for asthma in children and have found it useful to get "rid of" [slowly], the so often misused proton pump inhibitors.

Any of the readers experience with this kind of use for asa foetida?

I'm wondering if it makes a difference for those who do not live in that part of the world, where it is not a typical part of the diet, how the body would receive this spice? Can it be a cultural thing?

Much more on asafoetida

Here in Kerala, we use Asafoetida mainly for preparing pickles, Sambar and Rasam. These curries taste better with Asafoetida, but the quantity should be minimum, becasue an excess can result in disgusting taste. Without Asafoetida, we will really feel something missing in the curry! However, it can cause gastric disturbance in sensitive individuals. I often get patients coming with eructations and stomach troubles after taking this. Our grandmothers used to tell us to take Rasam (which contains asafotida) to improve digestion and to prevent stomach troubles. Routine use in excess may cause troubles, hence minimum dose is better. The concepts of homeopathy is followed in each and every field we come across!

would be interesting to know if there would be less problems of reflux in general if asa foetida is used as a spice routinely !

Dear Dr Rafeeque. Please provide your favorite recipe. I have never used this before and could probably find ingredient in the local Indian market. Would it sicken me?

No Indian kitchens can work without Asafoetida!
