Creating Waves of Awareness

Arthritis affects millions around the world, men ,women and sometime children. Elderly are often the victim.

Arthritis is inflammation of joints. In anatomy it is the area where two joints meet. It is not just one condition. There are more than 100 types of arthritis; Here only the types that are normally encountered will be discussed.

The causes of most of them are still not established and remains unknown .However it involves the
breakdown of cartilages which normally protects a joint allowing it to move smoothly.

Cartilages also absorbs shocks when pressure is applied in joints, for example when, walking, jumping,or even playing; When cartilages get worn out due use, the bones start rubbing against each other causing pain swelling , inflammation and stiffness.

Most common of them is Osteoarthritis. Some other major types are as under.

Rheumatoid arthritis , Fibromyalgia, Gout,Lupus, Juvenile arthritis, Lyme disease, Scleroderma, Ankyliosing, and Spondyliosis.

Osteoarthritis as mentioned earlier is the degeneration of joints, and is caused by breakdown of joint cartilages , which act as cushion between the bones. It normally affects single joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory type of arthritis. It is considered as an autoimmune
disease. I t is to be noted that immune cells attack the body's own healthy tissues.

Lining of the joint called Synovium is affected primarily by RA ( rheumatoid arthritis). It is to be
noted that there is a symmetrical pattern of affected joints, example both knees, both shoulders
RA can be detected by blood test.

The important characteristics of RA are, extreme fatigue, nodules which forms on joints, morning stiffness of small joints of hands and feet. Joint pains are worse later in the day. The joints may feel
warmer and swell. Bone spurs may form, bony enlargement, and limited range of movement may be experienced.

Here the pain is felt throughout the body and where the muscles and tendons are attached to bones
This is accompanied by fatigue.

This is another type of arthritis (see my posting on Gout for detail) where uric acid crystals are deposited in joint causing heat swelling and acute pain.

There are others such as Lupus, Juvenile arthritis, Lyme disease, Scleroderma, Ankylosing, and Spondyliosis.

In conventional treatment it is often pain and inflammation relieving drugs, such as Advil, Aleeve, Bayers Aspirin, etc. In conjunction with these one may resort to heat and cold application.

Stem cell therapy is also an option subject to medical advice,in some cases.

Often as a last resort hip and Knee replacement surgery are also applied.

Homeopathy can play a big part in alleviating the problems encountered in Arthritis. Specially
when it is combined with life style changes, specially in realm of food and daily activity such as
walking, swimming, yoga and meditation.

The earlier one notices the symptom of arthritis and takes remedial measures as suggested above, the results can be very rewarding. Ignoring it, is inviting pain and more pain.

I have a few cases of shifting pains in different parts of the body. Initially i was thinking that all are Fibromyalgia cases. All of them present with the pains on certain spots, with heat in the affected part. Next week patiaent comes with same pain in another parts. The previously affected area looks almost normal! Even bony prominences were painful. Finally, Dr Padmanabha Shenoy, HOD of Rheumatolody, AIMS, Kochi, helped me to diagnose the case - Palindromic Rheumatism (PR)

Pseudogout, also known as "false gout" and calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease (CPPD) is a type of arthritis that is often mistaken for gout or other arthritic conditions. It is caused by deposits of calcium phosphate crystals -- not uric acid -- in the joints.

Thanks for an informative overview with remedy options.
