What brought you to homeopathy? Tell your 150 word inspirational story that connects you to homeopathy. How has homeopathy changed your life?
My name is Alexandra Carneiro de Melo and I come from Portugal. My husband is Greek working in shipping which is why we currently live in Athens with our two children, a boy of six and a girl of four.
At age twenty three I obtained a degree in Food Engineering from the Superior College of Biotechnology at the University of Oporto in Portugal. Though my studies there were successful, following graduation, I lost interest in the technological aspect of the subject but loved the science part of it. I therefore decided to proceed with studies in England in an effort to further my aptitude towards science using technology for research.
A substantial scholarship from the Government of Portugal supported my studies at the University of Reading leading to a Master of Science degree in Food Microbiology. I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated my studies there but felt that further study, research and training was necessary to accomplish bare essentials for setting strong foundations for a career in science and research.
Having worked in the industry for a period and with the Portuguese Government’s continued support through a fresh scholarship I continued my studies and research at King’s College London obtaining a PhD in Microbiology in 1997 at the age of thirty two. After that I had two Post Doctoral positions, one at King’s College London sponsored by Bates Healthcom, and one at Imperial College. Worth mentioning is that throughout the PhD and Post-Doctoral research period I was part of a team that managed to register a patent with the British Ministry of Agriculture and Food and Fisheries but I was also able to effect several publications in various scientific journals including the journal for Applied and Environmental Microbiology.
Since having children and moving to Greece my career seems to have come to a halt. Research in this country is limited and I could not lecture as I do not have strong command of the language whilst employment in the food industry seems all but appealing.
Various reasons really drove me toward the use of homeopathy. Since childhood I had developed a “natural” fear for doctors and hospitals which grew with age primarily due to the complete lack of feedback and control by patients resulting in feeling defenceless and at the complete mercy of doctors in conventional medicine. In addition my Children’s health being of such critical importance in my life and having collaborated with pharmaceutical companies in the past, my phobia recently increased also as a result of the known pressure from intense vaccination and immunisation programs, routine paediatrician visits, etc..
Therefore I looked for alternative ways of dealing with health matters. Dealing with my eldest son’s chronic allergy to viruses which would demonstrate through massive and endless coughing attacks made this even more compelling.
At some point my son spent 4 nights in hospital due to the damage to his respiratory system from excessive coughing. Conventional medicine under the circumstances pumped him up with increasingly higher doses of Cortisone and strong antihistaminics with no visual long-term improvement.
Thankfully I discovered locally a wonderful homeopathic doctor that has virtually changed my way of living and helped improve considerably my son’s problem and more over the whole family’s health!
Having a natural passion for studying, an inquisitive mind, a reasonable sense of preservation and strong belief in the powers of Nature, I started buying and reading books of homeopathy hoping that one day I could practice homeopathy; and this is how the story starts…
Check which applies. I . . .
am a homeopath
What is your vision for the future of homeopathy
For Homeopathy to be implemented at reputable Universities in which the highest standard of homeopathic medicine can be taught. In addition, it should be part of the syllabus of allopathic medicine as well.
In such way, we would have recognized, properly trained Homeopaths and Medical doctors would not oppose so much, as they would not be so ignorant.

although there are certain sections of homeopathy and homeopaths which might claim to do so.
if you are ready to take up the case you have to be responsible professionally to handle the complications as and when they arise.
as a physician primarily you have to decide what suits your patient the most.medicine or surgical intervention.
if you want to treat medically or homeopathically
1. try to determine the size of the opening of ASD..
2. take the entire history like you have mentioned in your post.
3.if you think the case is syphillitic in nature try to understand that aspect in the patient with regards to the state of physicals and the disposition..
now our role primarily as physician and then homeopath
1.try to treat the complications and infections as and when they arise.
2.watch the overall growth of the patient
3. delay the complications or pulmonary hypertension or reversal of shunt or formation of eisenmengers syndrome.
so take a decision based on various factors about the approach.. whatever you decide we fellow homeopaths will be there...
hello.. now ASD ie atrial septal defect is basically a acynotic heart disease
ie ... the child will not turn blue... like in some other congenital heart diseases.
the other acynotic heart disease include VSD or ventricular septal defect
this disorder by itself if small and uncomplicated will not cause any symptoms in children.
but as the child grows and reaches 20+ age group.. the child may develop certain complications
also the child may remain physically underdeveloped as he grows, also increased chances of infection are there
normally blood in the heart flows from right to left ....ie body--superior venacava--right side---pulmonary artery---lungs ---pulmonary vein---- left side---aorta---body...
the left side of the heart pumps blood at more high pressure...than right side...normally..
also as the child grows or the opening is large then a left to right shunt .....develops in which blood flows from left to the right side of the heart..which in turn causes more pressure on the right side and the pulmonary vasculature.... and hence there might be reversal of shunt leading to right to left flow of blood ... resulting in mixing of oxygenated and non oxygenated blood.this is s a syndrome called "eisenmenger's syndrome" may occur..which is associated with high mortality...in this there might be increased breathlessness, haemoptysis ie spitting of blood.. and finally cynaosis..and organ damage...
in uncomplicated cases if surgically corrected leads to low mortality rate...
If Eisenmenger's syndrome has occurred, there is significant risk of mortality regardless of the method of closure of the ASD.
Closure of an ASD in individuals under age 25 has been shown to have a low risk of complications, and individuals have a normal lifespan (comparable to a healthy age-matched population).
