Organon 2010: Is a Medical Textbook After 200 Years Still Up to Date?

Discovery Institute | Recent Changes May Render Hippocratic Oath Harmful To Patients
Hahnemann's Remarks by Dr Shailendra
Homeopathy Draws Ire of German Government Officials Latest News from Hahnemann's Birthplace

It is not coincidence that we must defend and protect our Founder's literature and those who came after in this day and age. Always under scrutiny, we are on the cusp of change. Our economic, geo-political, economic systems are crumbling. In a way, as we read today Aphorism #17 using the word "annihilate" disease and disorder from the whole.

In each country, one by one, there are forces attempting to secure their power, control and influence. Using wily and twisted thinking to point the finger away from their own inadequacies, instead of repairing their own foundation, they forget that four fingers point back in their own direction.

People will not take this sitting down. People now have at their fingertips the internet to search, research and learn for themselves. Let everyone read and discern what is true and right.

Please stand up to be counted. Let us make a loud sound that rings the bell of truth.

Organon 2010: is a medical textbook after 200 years still up to date? by Ubiratan Cardinalli Adler | Homeopathy graduation Program, Faculdade de Medicina de Jundiaí, Jundiaí, Brazil
International Journal of High Dilution Research 2010;
9 (31): 61-62 61 Letter to the Editor

Dear Sir,
The question, proposed by the German Central Union of homeopathic Doctors, is the pivotal subject addressed in a series of lectures and discussions being held all over Germany in 2010 [1], to celebrate the bicentenary of homeopathy´s first medical textbook.

Hahnemann´s Organon of the Healing Art is the basis for classical homeopathy. Reading its 6th and posthumous edition is part of the education of 90% of the homeopaths, as indicated by a survey carried out at the 60th Homeopathic World Medical Congress (Berlin 2005) [2].

This might be odd to conventional doctors, used to read the latest editions of textbooks and journals, but Hahnemann´s therapeutics seems to be ahead of his time, in that classical homeopathy can be at least as effective as current standard pharmacotherapy [3].

For instance, classical homeopathy for children suffering from atopic eczema showed comparable results to conventional treatment in usual care [4]. Moreover, randomized controlled double blind trials using the dynamization scale introduced by the 6th edition (fifty-millesimal or Quinquagintamillesimal dynamization and its products, the Q-potencies) showed that homeopathically individualized Q-potencies were superior to placebo for fibromyalgia [5] or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children [6], and not inferior to the antidepressant fluoxetine in a sample of patients with moderate to severe depression [7].

More studies using the clinical-pharmaceutical protocol of the Organon [8] are of course needed, but so far its use by trained physicians have yield to challenging results, keeping up with what is recommended in most recent clinical textbooks for the treatment of some chronic diseases.

Int J High Dilution Res 2010; 9(31): 85-89

Time for everyone to post their perspective on the value of reading and studying The Organon. It is a foundational theory, premise, starting point for continuing the "Practice" of this method of healing.

Because something has longevity, do you not think it is of value? In China, old age and experience are considered golden treasures. There are many "lost arts" because people did not continue on with the study and tradition. How do we impress upon those 'youngsters' of the New Age of Western medicine that Hahnemann's words contain wisdom and knowledge? Do they not also take the Hippocratic Oath? Are they being 'hypocritical' when they begin their practice by reading and 'swearing to uphold' this document written in the 4th century B.C.E.?

The Origin of An Oath
They do not even know who wrote it or when it was first used.  And some say the followers of Pythagoras were more influenced by this writing than Hippocrates. Whereas, in reading The Organon we have more knowledge about the author, his life and times, the conditions in which he lived, his followers and the evolution over the course of six editions to the development of this method and practice.

For medical physicians today they post on their wall and take this pledge to uphold words translated from the Greek language that refers to ethical practice and to receiving the resources of healing from gods, which implies spirit. I question whether they understand that, and if they do, how they imbue their day-to-day medicine with this knowledge? Do they realize there is a "higher" force which provides the ability and power to heal? We call it the "vital force."

In the reading of this document do you see similarities and differences to the writings of The Organon? Is it not true that Hahnemann, himself, must have taken this oath upon becoming a physician?

Does it not say that they must ask for advise from others who may be able to cure and assist in healing? Oh, pray, how the medical arts have fallen into the traps that these wise ones were warning by taking this oath. We have too many incidents of deception within the drug industry, bribery, cover-ups, recalls, and side-effects.

It is through fear that their actions are no longer covert from within their own organizations and on the world scene. They have suppressed the pronouncements of physicians who have questioned the ethical and moral dealings within their societies. As courageous individuals and groups within the medical and drug 'industry' speak out, the public also questions and wants to find a better way for themselves and their families.

Going back to traditions is not backward thinking. Do what works and stick with it.  I hope that the decision-makers of today take upon themselves the true responsibility of their actions and own up to mistakes. The only way forward is to re-evaluate where you have been, determine where you went wrong, clean up and restructure using the best of what is available and be true and honest to make a better society.

When we began the Who's Reading the Organon Radio Show I had wanted to start with this reading the Hippocratic Oath. To compare The Organon, which is similar to taking an oath of understanding how to practice the pure and true art of healing, please visit the WRTO Group and listen to the Radio Shows.

The Hippocratic Oath (Original Translated into English) :
I swear by Apollo, the healer, Asclepius, Hygieia, and Panacea, and I take to witness all the gods, all the goddesses, to keep according to my ability and my judgment, the following Oath and agreement:

To consider dear to me, as my parents, him who taught me this art; to live in common with him and, if necessary, to share my goods with him; To look upon his children as my own brothers, to teach them this art.

I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.

I will not give a lethal drug to anyone if I am asked, nor will I advise such a plan; and similarly I will not give a woman a pessary to cause an abortion.

But I will preserve the purity of my life and my arts.

I will not cut for stone, even for patients in whom the disease is manifest; I will leave this operation to be performed by practitioners, specialists in this art.

In every house where I come I will enter only for the good of my patients, keeping myself far from all intentional ill-doing and all seduction and especially from the pleasures of love with women or with men, be they free or slaves.

All that may come to my knowledge in the exercise of my profession or in daily commerce with men, which ought not to be spread abroad, I will keep secret and will never reveal.

If I keep this oath faithfully, may I enjoy my life and practice my art, respected by all men and in all times; but if I swerve from it or violate it, may the reverse be my lot.

The Hippocratic Oath (Classic Translated into English)
I swear by Apollo the Physician and Asclepius and Hygieia and Panaceia and all the gods, and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will fulfill according to my ability and judgment this oath and this covenant:

To hold him who has taught me this art as equal to my parents and to live my life in partnership with him, and if he is in need of money to give him a share of mine, and to regard his offspring as equal to my brothers in male lineage and to teach them this art–if they desire to learn it–without fee and covenant;

to give a share of precepts and oral instruction and all the other learning to my sons and to the sons of him who has instructed me and to pupils who have signed the covenant and have taken the oath according to medical law, but to no one else.

I will apply dietic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice.

I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody if asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect.

Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art.

I will not use the knife, not even on sufferers from stone, but will withdraw in favor of such men as are engaged in this work.

Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice, of all mischief and in particular of sexual relations with both female and male persons, be they free or slaves.

What I may see or hear in the course of treatment or even outside of the treatment in regard to the life of men, which on no account one must spread abroad, I will keep myself holding such things shameful to be spoken about.

If I fulfill this oath and do not violate it, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and art, being honored with fame among all men for all time to come; if I transgress it and swear falsely, may the opposite of all this be my lot.

The Hippocratic Oath (Modern Version)
I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:
I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.

I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.

I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.

I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

Dear Debby,

This is very thought provoking article not only for the Homeopaths but to whole Medical Fraternity.....which have lost the DIRECTION in their mission, work and Promise...and above all the FAITH... a kind of Oath,Law,and directions...and is period of 200 years...there occured lot of events in world....lot of demographic, and power shifts....but tis old Textbook on still...showing path to every his mission to promote health and prevention of diseases.
The original Hippocratic oath says that "first do not harm"
The second aphorism forbids the use of the knife or fire as therapeutic measures.

That is their first line of defense!

The Organon is such a seminal book that you can never study it enough. I have read it 64 times at least - twice a year since I started in 1979. I recommend to study it again and again. Even after 64 times, I still discover things I did not notice before. Law and directions. It is showing path to every physician in his mission to promote health and prevention of diseases.
"Organon is complete in all aspects. It needs to be updated due to advancement in every field of medicine. Its also need modification."

In first reading of your comment....straightway everyone has denied ....

Respecting everyone and agreeing with this thought of Dr Arohi...i would like to briefly state my reasons as following....(briefly)

1) Reading Organon alongwith Lesser writings of Dr S Hahnemann and Dr can clearly see many articles..especially of Dr Boenninghausen...who felt this. .....He suggests that we must use stethoscope in assessment while proving of that we can ascertain the exact location of the part affected .....(so probably this means minor updation in Aph related to Provings)

2) Aphorisms are Generalized....which need to be more precise...especially in different varieties of diseases.....( I feel this generalization has lead to many confusions in later generation).

3) Miasms theory need more explanation........(one can read in lesser writing of article Sycosis...where He writes ....he disscussed with Dr Hahnemann over this matter and He also agreed...list of antipsoric med and also anti sycotic revised

4) Organon through various editions have minor modification and updation...Sometime i feel if Dr Hahnemann would have been alive to date....he would have given us guidance regarding treatment of many new disorders of present era...with clear cut guideline separately for each kind of disorder...explaining how to deal with them.

many more....
Hello Piyush - I see you have elaborated further on Dr Arohi's comments. It would be interesting to know how Hahnemann would feel about further updates, and where he would refine or add to what is already written. Of course, this is totally imaginative and speculative on our parts.
Dear Debby,

Is it not true that present era..has controversies on each and every point ......From Case taking, Classification of disease, analysis of symptoms ,selection of remedy ,selection of scale of remedy, selection of potency, medium of drugs, duration , intercurrent prescriptions, advice on diet and regimine,.....etc.....

It may be quiet easy for an experienced physician...who had decided their methods,....but never easy for any novice.

There are lot of misconception in reason may be (That sixth edition got published after so many years....and meanwhile in due time after MASTER'S DEATH.....many started to build their own methodology....even MMP was not studied by every physician....(HERE I MAY ASK A QUESTION....HOW MANY STUDENTS AND COLLEGES AND PRESENT TRAINING COURSES...STRESS OR MAKE IT COMPULSORY BOOK FOR EVERYONE?)

So in future ...also have we planned out in detail on each controversies...and can we give or disscuss in detail on each aspect.....this is what is needed to be addressed in Organon....

This words are not written with intention of condemn or anger or any negative we know every patient is going to question us not Dr responsibility lies on understand the method and concepts that we can work in better way...

New generation of Homeopaths ,need details....not only generalization.

According to my information---No one.
Well, Sajjad, not in Australia, when I lived there. Not in the Sankaran colleges. Not in the Scholten teachings. Not in the schools where homoeopathy is but one of the so-called "modalities.

In other words, it is at least sorely lacking. That is at least strange - the seminal book about homoeopathy is not taught. The reasons are that once you DO study it, you discover the glaring discrepancies in the modern systems. So it is better to maintain the systems if you DO NOT TEACH ORGANON.

Soon I will open my own school. There, you cannot even get from the first year to the second, if you do not know the Organon. It will be compulsory reading and study to pass all exams.
Dear Kaviraj,
Well, Sajjad, not in Australia, when I lived there. Not in the Sankaran colleges. Not in the Scholten teachings. Not in the schools where homoeopathy is but one of the so-called "modalities.
It is still not in Australia!!
Dear Dr Piyush

Here you are talking about MMP no ?

MMP is included in the syllabus of MD(Hom) Materia Medica - University of Calicut. 'Organon' is a compulsory book in the BHMS syllabus of most of the Universities in India.
Dr Kaviraj in the following comment is mentioning 'Teaching Organon'.
That's why i asked for a clarification.

Dear Dr Saji,

MMP should be is Organon. It should be taught in BHMS.

The question is very specific but for everyone.

The question is on whole set of controversies ......which is weakening the confidence of novice at first place, patients the second ,and Homoeopathy and Medical fraternity at last.

Why is their place for controversies?
Dear Dr Pandey
Perhaps you can tell more about what or how you think The Organon can be 'updated?'

What advancements have been made that need to be included?

This has been a topic of discussion on the radio show
