Creating Waves of Awareness

The following article was published in the Herring issue of The Similitude.

All the major medical systems are a result of continuous work of a number of people over the period of thousands of years, viz. modern medicine, Ayurveda, Unani, Chinese medical systems, developed by a number of people over a long period of time. Homoeopathy is the only major science, which is created and developed by single person Dr. Samuel Christian Fredrick Hahnemann. This renders our imagination clueless as to the height of the greatness of this man. For a logically thinking mind, Hahnemann is surely way ahead as a man of medicine to any other medical researcher in the history of mankind. He made Homoeopathy so complete that no one was able to contribute to the structure of science as such. No doubt that a lot of people have enriched the treasure of materia medica, but no one has added any major substantial thing to the basic principle and structure of science as such. Herring is probably only the person who has added something substantial to the basic principle structure of Homoeopathic science by his law of cure.

Now it will not be difficult for a logically thinking person to digest the idea that Hering has not only contributed to Homoeopathy but to all the medical systems. Any system, which claims to be holistic and is capable of giving real cure, will have to reckon Herring’s law of cure because of its universal reality. Homoeopathy is not the only system, which can give real cure. Even Hahnemann has reckoned other things like minerals, magnets, electricity and galvanism and mesmerism etc. capable of giving the real cure.

As contribution to Homoeopathy by Herring is immensely significant, contribution to the Herring’s law by Dr. Vijayakar is also huge in terms of proving it scientifically with the help of modern science and adding one more criteria of miasms to it. It was genius of Dr. Vijayakar, which led him to study embryology and correlate Hering’s law with the development pattern of the embryo and morphological gradients. When one studies embryology, it becomes so easy to understand the law of cure and one can then understand that why and which corollary is important from the four namely:

1. From above downwards.
2. From within outwards.
3. From a more important organ to less important organ.
4. In the reverse order of coming of symptoms.

There are some who believe that these four corollaries are four separate laws by themselves. That means there are four Herring’s laws of cure. It is so unfortunate that we do not get the original writings of Hering regarding his law of cure. It is only some other writers like Kent and Stuart Close, have mentioned about this in their books. Fortunately for us this law survived in tides of time and at this juncture is rejuvenated by Dr. Vijayakar with one more corollary:

It is “cure should take place from more destructive miasm to less destructive miasm”.

If one can understand this concept in its essence then it can be a great satisfaction to see that not only the cure took place perfectly but also the patient is now in general is altogether in different miasm that is one can see the changes in the disposition and constitution of the patient. It is joy to see the patient who was looking syphilitic now turned to psoric with better facial features. And the healer who has achieved this will realize that he is so wonderfully fulfilling his high and only mission by achieving the highest ideal of cure.

Saine writes that this was never mentioned as a "Law" by Dr Hering.

Actually it was kent who named these laws as Hering's law.

As faar as I know it was not Kent who named these as Laws.

Dr. Dushyant is correct in writing that this was never stated as a Law by Herring. This is what Kent writes in his lesser writings:

“It does not occur in Hahnemann's writing …..There is scarcely anything of this law in the literature of Homoeopathy, except the observation of symptoms going from above to the extremities, eruptions appearing on the skin and discharges from mucous membranes or ulcers appearing upon the legs as internal symptoms disappear. There is no specific assertion in literature except as given in the lectures in Philosophy at the Post-Graduate School.”

Although for the sake of convenience it is often referred to as a Law by most Homeopaths, though it cannot be called a “Law” in the true sense of its meaning.

Kent has written in his lectures about the hering's law. No other person has mentioned about this including Hering. This is what i have heard. Can anybody clear this doubt?

Dr Hahnemann developed the Theory of Chronic diseases. In this he mentions -" Chronic Diseases, not acute ones, specifically chronic diseases, disappear in the reverse order of appearing of symptoms." In this Chronic and non-venereal diseases are mentioned.

In the Introduction to the first English edition to Chronic Diseases published in 1845, Hering mentions - that psoric diseases must disappear in the reverse order of appearing of symptoms. This is the repetition of the Hahnemann. Hering further adds here that - pain usually, not always but pain and only pain disappears from above down. Hering also adds the most important organs to less important organ part here.

In !865, Hering writes a paper, 'Hahnemann`s three practical rules'. in one of the rules he goes back to the direction of cure, but this time he mentions that disease must disappear in the reverse order appearing of symptoms. He doesn`t say it is a law, he says it is a practical rule. he doesn`t mention above down or inside out etc.

Kent writes about it in his lectures - " Cure must proceed  from center to circumference... this is from above downwards, from within outwards, from more important to less important organs, from head to the hands and feet... in the reverse order of their coming.

Thanks for the clarification.

Hering's laws are not applicable everytime. So calling them "laws" is not appropriate. Rather "hering's rule of progress of cure" would be more appropriate.

In miraculous cures, no law is seen. In classical cures any law stated in books may be observed.

It can serve as a guide not the law.
