Creating Waves of Awareness

The question of potency selection has always kept the Homeopaths of all times wondering and with different views. The homeopath should be open to use the entire range of potencies, from lowest to the highest, depending upon the demand of the case. The choice of potency would depend upon each individual case. Close states "All the potencies may be needed. No one potency, high or low, will meet the requirement of all cases at all times."

Homoeopaths need not be satisfied only with the selection of the similimum but also with the selection of the proper potency. Kent states, “When a remedy is correct, it will always work, whatever the potency. How deep and how long the remedy will work, depends on the potency.” The potential of the remedy must meet the requisite susceptibility.

The question of potency selection is not a simple one. Totality is made up of various components. The potency selection depends on various components and not on a single factor. Certain guidelines have been laid down though; there are no fixed laws for the selection of the potency.

Certain factors for selection of potency are –

1.      Disease Potential –  Disease-potential involves various factors:

a.       Value of symptoms,

b.      Nature & seat of disease,

c.       Tissue affinity,

d.      Pathology involved,

e.       Duration of Pathology and Pace.

2.      Sensitivity and Susceptibility - Sensitivity and Susceptibility are denoted as high, moderate and low. High sensitivity shows a high level of reactivity.

3.      Miasmatic Interpretation.

4.      Similarity: Degree and Level.

5.      Suppression.

6.      Type of the Patient.

Indications of high & low potency are simplified below in a tabular form for the easy comprehension of a homoeopath.

Potencies and aggravations

In my experience, the 10M potency is the most effective in bringing about lasting psychological improvement, and I give it in most cases of psychological pathology unless the body is too frail to take it, or there is a danger of serious physical aggravation. In these cases the potency can be raised stepwise over several months, strengthening the body to the point where it can take higher potencies safely. I have found that LM potencies are more likely to help the patient psychologically than low to middle centesimal potencies, hence I tend to use a daily dose of an LM potency when there is psychological pathology and the body is too sick to take a 1M or 10M potency. It is not necessary to begin with the first LM potency. Indeed this is often too weak to effect much change. As a rough guide, if it is safe to give a 30c potency, it is safe to start with LM3, and if it is safe to give a 200c potency, it is safe to start with LM6. Once the physical pathology has lessened to the point where a 1M or 10M can be given, these potencies will bring about further psychological improvement.

I have not found that 10M produces psychological aggravations that are dangerous, or that lasted longer than four weeks. However, considerable aggravations do occur when the potency has not been raised stepwise, and the patient should be warned of these, assured that they are part of the process of healing, and will be followed by great psychological improvement.

Read belladonna thousands of symptoms. I guess, a patient must have at least one symptom and that is enough for belladonna to work as homeopathically -:)

In homeopathy, there are few remedies which have the property to change the biochemistry of the body of the patient by its own action (or you can say by force) irrespective of the fact that whether symptoms of the patient matched / tally or not….. I mean to say, as a healthy person just take one drop of sulphur or belladonna cm and wait and see. You will definitely observe few changes in your body. May be some symptoms will be born. Why does this happen? Few remedies are so strong in their actions that whether the symptoms are existing in the patient or not these remedies have their own strong action in the body. An unknown change is occurred in the body whether the body is healthy or sick. Belladonna is one that can bring change in the body chemistry.

Now a patient comes, irrespective of the fact what are the symptoms you have noted or sign you have observed. You simply give the patient belladonna in potency form from 3 to cm depending upon your previous clinical experience and acuteness of the case. Now what will happen? The belladonna will carry on its action in the body irrespective of the symptoms of the patient. Just like if a snake bites on a hand of a sick person. The snake venom will not take care of patient sickness and it will have its own action in the body. In the same way, bell will be having its own action being having above 5 dangerous alkaloids in it. It will bring change in the patient. That change boost the body immune system or provide a pulse to the immune system to wakeup. That ultimately cures the patient whatever the symptoms were. This kind of property is noted in all homeopathic medicines but in very few.

Belladonna is our antibiotic.

I do not practice that technique but I know who are using this technique in many cases but not all the time.

Its also an observation of a doctor just like HAHNEMANN quoted all his observations in Organon.

Dear Dr.Mas

"He is also doing practice for last 20 years. So such type of doctors are also exisitng on earth. :)".  What you mean to say?? I did not get. can you please explain elaborately.....what is your coment on the potency selection??

Everything has been based on some rule. homoeopathy science is based on the rule similia similibus currentur. So to select potency also have some rules.

I know a doctor in Lahore, who always (may be 90%) use belladonna in each case. Whatever the condition of the patient whatever the sate of mind, he always give belladonna in variety of potencies. About 50 patients take consultation from him daily ;) He is also doing practice for last 20 years. So such type of doctors are also exisitng on earth. :)

Dr. Sajjad,

So you are saying in the selection of homeopathic potency, there is a big rule and that is "THERE IS NO RULE" ;)
