Creating Waves of Awareness

A new study shows that homeopathy improves quality of life for chronic sinusitis patients:

Homeopathic treatment improves the quality of life of patients with chronic sinusitis, say German researchers. Their study followed 134 adults with long-term symptoms of sinusitis over eight years, with 97% previously treated with conventional medicine.

BMC Ear Nose and Throat Disorders 2009; 27 July early online public...

In the first 24 months, patients received 8.3 ± 6.2 homeopathic prescriptions. Half of all prescriptions were covered by 10 homeopathic remedies (figure 1), but in total, 145 remedies were applied. Most used were the potencies: C200, 35.7%; C1000, 23.0%; C30, 14.2%; C10000, 7.6%; Q1, 3.5%; D12, 3.3%. (Letters indicate dilutions steps during manufacturing: 1/100 for centesimal (C-) potencies, 1/50000 for quinquagintamillesimal (Q-) potencies, and 1/10 for decimal (D-) potencies; numbers give the step repetitions. For example, a "C200" preparation is diluted-1/100-then-agitated 200 times. Thus, 88.3% of the remedies were potentiated to a dilution beyond Avogadro's number.

Percent of prescriptions during study period, remedies identified with traditional abbreviations (in decreasing order of frequency: Sepia, Pulsatilla, Lycopodium, Phosphorus, Carcinosinum, Nux vomica, Sulphur, Natrium muriaticum, Staphisagria, Silicea).

The strongest improvements in the severity of complaints were seen in the first 3 months, they generally continued during the first 24 months and persisted for another 6 years (Table 4). The physicians' assessments of the severity change tended to be more positive than patients' own assessments (data not shown). The improvements in health-related QoL were of smaller effect size (Table 4) but statistically significant. The latter was confirmed by Mee-Chua-tests for the mental component score (p = 0.0859, p = 0.034, and p < 0.0001 at 3, 12 and 24 months) but not for the physical component score (p = 0.6869, p = 0.6859, and p = 0.1259). After 24 months, sinusitis and other baseline diagnoses were considerably relieved (Table 5), while large reductions in the use of conventional medicines and health care services were observed (Table 6). The observed improvements were still present in the 8-year follow-up (Table 4).

A comment by Graham Jagger on 06 Aug 09 says that, "I would be happy to see an observational study showing that recurrent courses of antibiotics, steroid nasal sprays or sinus surgery had achieved the same long term result."

The basis of this study appears to be the fact these 134 individuals had already tried conventional medicine without improvement. Why would anyone want to see the results of 8 years of steroids upon any human being. We know for a 'fact' that it causes havoc with the immune system and reproductive and hormones with long-term side effects. We also know that 8 years of antibiotics would shut down a person's natural biological balance of bacteria leaving the person open to all kinds of infections, including MRSA. And to undergo surgery is always a 'risk' that everyone must sign papers understanding when undergoing anesthesia and the knife.

This is the mind-set of individuals who are not willing to accept that something opposed to their belief system will have any beneficial effects for another individual.

[QUOTE: It is a pity that the 10 years of conventional medicine to which the vast majority of these patients had been subjected appeared no to include 'life-style regulation and placebo or context effects ' lasting over 8 years. I would be happy to see an observational study showing that recurrent courses of antibiotics, steroid nasal sprays or sinus surgery had achieved the same long term result.]

Homeopathy can do a lot for sinusitis, even for chronic long-standing cases. I had a lady patient, aged 48, case of chronic atrophic rhinitis associated with chronic maxillary sinusitis. She had taken "tons" of antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs from an ENT surgeon. Initialy i gave Hydrastis, later Kali bich as a specific drug. When these specific prescriptions failed, i took her case once again. Her words, "doctor, i am not in a position to mingle with others because of the horrible smell from my nose. I feel isolated. I feel like ending my life". I prescribed Aurum met 200 C, 3 doses. Now she regularly comes to my clinic, not for her treatment, but for her relatives, family members and neighbours. Now she is almost like an advertizing agent, who brings patients to me without taking any commission. The credit goes to Aurum met.
This case realy helped me to understand the importance of proper use of homeopathic drugs and to avoid blind prescriptions using specific drugs.

Sounds like a very interesting study. People really suffer with this disease.
