The general trend in the present era is to give much importance to the clinical pathology; this practice especially is quite vogue among the practitioners of the so called modern medicine which was termed as Allopathy by Hahnemann. General people also think that the disease is diagnosed well/correctly through clinical tests i. e. through pathological, radiological, bacteriological, etc. tests. The belief is not true in every case of disease. In numerous cases the clinical tests do not reveal any abnormality, yet, the patients feel terribly sick because they are actually sick. This fact has often been seen in various cases; however in various cases of diseases the importance of the clinical findings can not be denied. In various cases though the clinical findings are not necessary for the purpose of prescribing the curative medicine homoeopathically, yet, in such cases the results of the clinical findings are helpful in evaluating the progress of the case.
For prescribing the curative medicine the homoeopathic physician does not essentially need the findings of clinical pathology; he must possess the deep and sound knowledge of his Materia Medica and knowledge of the human nature; for example see what Dr. J. T. Kent says in his ‘Lectures on Materia Medica’ under Ignatia amara:
“We do not know half as much about the human mind as we think we do. We only know is manifestations. These little things belong to this sphere of the action of this medicine. The one who knows the Materia Medica applies it in its breadth and its length, and sees in it that which is similar.
To distinguish between what is predicated of the patient and what is predicated of a part is an essential in the study of the Materia Medica. Everything that is predicated of the patient is general, everything that is predicated of a part is particular.
If you are well acquainted with sickness, well acquainted with pathological conditions and their manifestations, you are then able to say whether you should or should not be surprised. You are then able to say what is unnatural, what is common to sickness.
In Ignatia you find what is unnatural, and what is unexpected.
You see an inflamed joint, or an inflamed part where there is heat, redness, throbbing, and weakness; you will handle it with great care for fear it will be painful. Ordinarily you have a perfect right to expect it would be painful. But you find it is not painful, and sometimes ameliorated by hard pressure.
Is not that a surprise?
You look into the throat. It is tumid, inflamed, red; the patient complaints of a sore throat and pain. Naturally you will not touch it with your tongue depressor for fear it will hurt. You have every reason to suppose that the swallowing of solids will be painful. But you ask the patient when the pain is present, and the patient will say: "When I am not swallowing anything solid." The pain is ameliorated by swallowing anything solid, by the pressure. It pains all other times.
The stomach is just as strange in its indigestion.
Some day or other you will have a queer patient, vomiting everything taken into the stomach, and you will have her try gentle food, a little toast, and the simplest possible things, because she has been vomiting for days and people begin to worry about it for fear she will starve to death. You try this, and you try that, and she can keep nothing down. Finally she says, "If I could only have some coleslaw and some chopped onions, I think I could get along all right." It is a hysterical stomach, and the patient eats some raw cabbage and some chopped onions, and from that time on she is well.
Under the lecture “Calcarea carbonica” Dr. Kent writes:
“Calcarea has cured many cases of opacity of the cornea (Bar. iod.).
In an old case a cure can never be promised. It is one of the results of disease, and we never know when we are going to remove the results of disease, because the intelligent homoeopath never prescribes for the results of disease. He prescribes for the patient.
An opacity itself, when it is present, is not a symptom, but a result of disease. Often when a patient is prescribed for on his general symptoms, such a state of opacity of the cornea will, after a while, begin to pass away. The patient grows better, feels better himself. His symptoms commence to subside, and after the symptoms have subsided pathological conditions will commence to subside.
Do not be discouraged in prescribing if the pathological conditions do not go away; but if all the symptoms of the patient have gone away, and the patient is eating well, and is sleeping well, and doing well, do not feel that it is impossible for that opacity of the cornea to go away, for sometimes it will.
I have known patients to come back, years later, even after I had given them up as cured, as their symptoms had all disappeared, and I was foolish enough to say to the patient,” Well, I do not suppose this condition will ever go away, but you are all well, there is nothing to prescribe on, there is not much use of you taking any more medicine," but in six months from that time the patient would come back to me and say "Doctor, do you suppose the treatment you gave me had anything to do with this trouble going away? It has nearly all disappeared."
I only tell you this to give you an idea how long it takes to restore order, for nature herself to replace the bad tissue and put healthy tissue in that same place, to restore an organ. It takes time, and it is best that we should not be surprised.
It may be that the medicine has done all it can do.
Here is another thing I have seen, even when there were no symptoms left, and after waiting considerable time and there were no symptoms, I have seen another dose of the same medicine that was given on the last symptoms give the patient a great lift, and pathological conditions commence to go away.”
In a number of cases, some times quite severe, it has been seen that the clinical pathology do not reveal any abnormality. The physicians who base their diagnosis upon the clinical pathology find themselves unable to help the sick. On the other hand who knows and understands the manifestations of the human beings, still, become able to diagnose and thus CURE such patients with ease. I do not claim that I know the manifestations well but I am trying to acquire the knowledge. The following case is an illustration of the above said fact.
Case - A 15 years old young man was brought for my help, his manifestations were as explained hereunder:
• He was suffering from persistent vomiting for the past four months.
• The vomiting used to < from eating and drinking anything.
• There was no pain of any kind.
• Now after much medication vomiting bouts are > but feels great acidity.
• Sour water comes up often (pyrosis persisting).
• Loss of appetite.
• General emaciation
• Great weakness.
• Complexion has become very dark.
• Stools not clear.
• Developed tendency of coryza and cough used to < in the night. Also headache.
• After much enquiry about the circumstances/his eating habits etc. his mother told that, previous to the trouble he often used to eat Chowmien even after taking his meals.
Taking such food stuff which contains hot chilies, sauces, viniger. etc. and spices, damages the mucus lining of the stomach and sets a chain reaction in the digestive secretions, resulting in severe acidity and ulceration of the mucus lining of the stomach.
In this case though the physicians prescribed various drugs for the patient but they could not find any specific clinical evidence to determine the clinical diagnosis of the case. All the reports are normal. (Photos of the Reports of the clinical tests are produced below):
Report of Blood Test 21 – 4 – 2008
Report of Blood Test 16 – 5 -2008
Report of the X-Ray chest 17 – 5 – 2008 X-Ray chest
Impression – Normal skiagram
Barium Meal follow through Report 17 - 5 - 2008
Impression – Normal study.
Ultra Sound Report 17 – 5 - 2008
Impression – Normal study for abdomen.
Since the patient was given lot of medicines by the Allopathic Physicians during the past four months so first of all on 26th July 2008, I gave Nux vomica 200 so that it may pave the path for properly indicated medicine.
5th August 2008 – complained of hyperacidity, sour eructations and pyrosis.
Attacks of headache also.
Aversion to milk.
Now, Iris versicolor 200 was prescribed.
This medicine promptly started improvement in all his symptoms. Gradually, his appetite returned; hyperacidity subsided; pyrosis stopped and the attacks of headache gone. And by 20th October 2008 he is a changed person flesh regained. His original complexion returned. Now he is a healthy person again.
There are numerous such cases we meet in our practice in which the clinical pathology does not reveal any abnormality but the patients suffer seriously from various manifestations. To cure the patient the homoeopathic physician requires the manifestations present in the patient and the same are the sole guide for making successful prescription. The law of Cure “SIMILIA SIMILIBUS CURANTUR” thus comes true and handy in curing all kinds of the sufferings of mortals and stands to be universal.
Discussion: Why Iris versicolor?
Dr. A. L. BLACKWOOD, in his book “A Manual of Materia Medica Therapeutics and Pharmacology” explains the Iris versicolor as follows:-
Physiological action of Iris versicolor – This agent has a profound action upon the gastric intestinal tract, upon the glandular and nervous system. It produces acidity of the secretions. There is a sensation as though the contents of the stomach had turned to vinegar. This acidity is the central feature in the action of the drug, giving rise to violent catharsis. The liver is stimulated and the amount of bile secreted is increased. Intense burning may be felt in the epigastric region, probably due to its action upon the pancreas, which shows inflammation, intense congestion of the smaller vessels, with rupture of some of them, and extravasation of blood into the tissues of the gland.
Therapeutic action – It relieves a type of dyspepsia when there is hyperchlorhydria, with a sensation of burning that extends to the pharynx; the saliva is increased, there is frequently burning and distress in the oesophagus and stomach, with vomiting of food, especially following the taking of rich or fat foods.
Iris versicolor has cured a number of my cases of migraine (especially right sided) where hyperacidity was present and the patients used to have sour and bitter vomiting which used to relieve the migraine. Video of such a chronic case can be watched on my web site (http://www.homoeopathy-milddose.com
