Creating Waves of Awareness

"Daisy daisy give me your answer tooo--------" Its a song which I remember singing as a boy scout in Calcutta around our weekly campfire

Little did i know that decades later i would be writing a blog on Daisy and Bellis Perennis the homeopathic medicine which matches the symptoms of Arnica yet some time surpasses it depending on the symptoms at that time.

Bellis as I have noticed is a neglected remedy of Homeopathy having been overshadowed by ARNICA HYPERICUM, CALENDULA, ARSENICUM, and few others

I was first attracted by its use by Dr Steven Subotnick in his very popular book "Sport & exercise injuries" Later i applied it to patients, and found it effective. I remember a case many years ago about a Philipino lady who complained of lower abdominal pain after she had had her reproductive organs examined in a Kuwaiti Hospital.

I immediately thought of "surgical intervention" and understanding that deeper tissues were involved gave her BELLIS 30 a few doses. It had worked like a charm to my surprise. She was free of pain and discomfort within 24 hours.

I would like to quote here what various masters have had to say about Bellis.

Burnett writes "Bellis Perennis is our common daisy; acts very much like Arnica, even to the contingent production of erysipelas. It causes pain in spleen and generally symptoms of coryza and of feeling very tired---"

In his diseases of the skin he has a good deal to tell about Bellis. He says, "In this little volume I am, before all things, seeking to show that diseases of the skin have for the most part their origin, not in the skin itself, but are essentially cutaneous manifestation of some more or less remote organic or organismic wrongs."

Boerickes MM says about Bellis, "First remedy in injuries to inner tissues after major surgical work."

"Results of injuries to nerves with intense soreness and intolerance of cold bathing.

Excellent remedy for sprains and bruises.

Female: Varicose veins in pregnancy during pregnancy inability to walk.

Uterus feels sore as if squeezed. Soreness of abdominal walls and of uterus.

Fletcher' says, "Acne from cold drinks. He says, "Bellis Perennis against the ill-effects of wet cold in the overheated." Fletcher further states, "I refer to Johann Schroeder's Pharmacopea Universalis with Hoffman's remarks 1748, "The Daisy is here commended in haemorrhage, dysentery, as a "herrliches Wund kraut,"  internally and externally, i.e, as a vulnerary, for the effects of falls , blows, bruises and the like pains in the joints, rheumatism (and hence called' Gicht kraut' ); in nocturnal cramps, 'angina pectoris', fevers and inflammations; for lameness; and he says that German mothers were in the habit of using it for their children as an aspirant"

" Further it would appear that Mindererus, in his Kriegs Artzeney, cannot sufficiently praise the Daisy in such cases, for he declares that an account of this action of the herb ' should be written up over all gates and doors for the benefit of the poor harvester who in the hot harvest season get ill from partaking of cold drink' Its effect in such cases he reaffirms is remarkable, and so prompt that amelioration sets in at once'.

"Christoph Schorer in his 'Medicine peregrinantium' gives similar testimony, and says that he cured two men of dangerous coughs, with emaciation, that were due to their having drunk something cold when they were heated. And Schroeder affirms that it will cure dropsy due to drinking too much in ' dog days' i.e hot weather"

Robin Murphy writes about Bellis with regards to breast cancer: Breast Tumors or cancer developing after mechanical injuries. Breast Cancer for contusions (ARN, CON) Breast Tumor or cancer after injury. Breast Cyst Nodules, Lumps, after injury. Breast cyst,Breast engorged, swollen bruised. Breast and uterus engorged. For treating DOMS (Delayed onset muscle soreness) after physical exertion, Bellis is very useful.

Dr Rafeeque, thank you for your information. Will appreciate if you could dilate on DOMS with some concrete example.Any case associated with DOMS where you may have used Bellis will be most welcome and add to our knowledge.

DOMS comes after some unaccustomed physical work. The aching sore bruised pain remains for several days. I get a number of such cases. Initially, I used to give Arnica, Rhustx, Ruta, etc. on symptom similarity. I also had some failures(may be due to wrong selection of remedy). Then I started searching for a drug that can be given as a "specific". Bellis per came to my mind. Here the similarity is of lower level, hence I prefer to give the tincture. Nowadys spinal problems are very common among bike drivers and those who sit on rotating chairs. When a patient comes for the first time, I give Bellis in tincture form. Ofcourse, it can only give some temporary relief. Till we get the similimum, we can hold the patients with us. I feel, this is practical in this busy world.

This post may not be related with injury, but still the followings are worth mentioning:

"For patients whose only symptom is waking early in the morning and being unable to go to sleep again, think not only of SULPH. but also of BELLIS PER."

"For dizziness of cerebral stasis in old people, think of BELLIS PER."

I have used Bellis P. with some success for headache when other symptoms agreed. Also, I had a patient with a hernia caused by incomplete healing of abdominal wall after surgery. Bellis P. gave her some relief. I wish she had come to me sooner. Earlier in the course of this injury, she could massage the area and the intestine would slip back inside the abdominal wall. Now it will not. Bellis P. could have helped close the slit in the abdominal wall but now there is (I fear) tissue damage that will only respond to further surgery. I have set her up with a physician who I believe will be able to help her with this. At least Bellis P. was there to give her symptomatic relief until she sees him.
