Creating Waves of Awareness
You might have watched the program on the National Geographic Channel about “T”, a13-year-old Indian girl who cries blood! She also gets episodes of
severe bleeding from the scalp, hands and legs. But the strangest
this is, there is no signs of ulceration or even a small abrasion on
the bleeding sites. The bleeding stops automatically within a few
minutes and once we wipe off the blood, only normal skin can be seen.
She had taken treatment from the local doctors in UP (India). No one
could diagnose the disease, and most of them said that she is
bleeding to gain attention. Later she consulted some mystic healers
and they diagnosed this condition as a result of some evil spirits.
One Ayurvedic physician came forward to treat her, but she was not
ready to stay in his hospital.
Finally she was examined by Dr. George Buchanan, a pediatric hematologist at Southwestern and
Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, USA, who had come to India to
study her case. He did all types on investigation and found nothing
abnormal in this girl. He diagnosed the case as T syndrome (T stands
for the name of the girl). Another possibility he has mentioned is
Munchausen syndrome, a mental illness wherein the patient creates the
symptoms as an attention seeking tool. However the doctor is not sure
about the diagnosis, and said that she should be monitored
continuously for several hours to rule out Munchausen syndrome or any
other related causes.
