Creating Waves of Awareness

Almost ten years ago a federal report called "To Err is Human" documented the astounding death toll of allopathic medicine, almost 100,000 deaths a year in the United States. The report included specific recommendations. The report:

* Encouraged states to require medical error reporting.
* Said the public "has the right to be informed about unsafe conditions."
* Recommended the creation of a national patient safety center.
* Urged that hospitals improve the level of safety within their walls.
* Advocated a voluntary system for hospitals to report and learn from errors.

Ten years later, very little has been accomplished, as doctors are not interested. Compare the response to the swine flu, a global health emergency to the response to iatrogenic illness, which will claim more than ten times as many deaths this year. Don't think that this is only a problem in the United States, Great Britain has similar levels of iatrogenic illness, and probably all Western nations do as well.

The Hearst newspaper chain has documented this shameful response in an article that's worth reading and bookmarking for the next time some skeptic spouts off about how alternative practitioners endanger their patients health.
