Creating Waves of Awareness

A Clinical Case From Infancy Stage of My Practice

This case came to me in the beginning of my practice when I was not much confident both in selection of the remedy, as well as, I did not have much knowledge of disease diagnosis/pathology.

A 5 month old female baby brought with the complaint of crying spells along with a note from the paediatrician who has examined the child mentioning--Intermittent colic? Intussusception. Advised-admission and further observation.

As the parents were very poor and unable to afford the hospitalisation; decided to try my treatment. I observed that the child was crying intermittently with a loud shrill cry, pulling her ears while crying; the pain used to last for 10-15 seconds and the very next moment the child was playful and laughing. I gave Chamomilla 200/3 doses every 2 hourly followed by Colocynth 30 to be given every 2 hourly and called next day as I wanted to observe the turn of events after 24 hours.

The parents brought the child next day saying there is no change in crying attacks and the child has passed greenish, watery stool 4 times since yesterday. Every time during the pain there is dryness of mouth and the baby feels better with a sip of water and we are giving warm water to sooth her. I prescribed 3 doses of Arsenicum-alb 200 every 2 hourly and colocynth 30 continued and advised to visit after 2 days if the colic is less.

They came next day saying there is no change and asking me to do something as they have not slept since few nights. The diarrhoea and the pain is same. At this stage I thought of referring repertory and searched in Phatak's repertory a rubric.

Intestines, Intussusception -- Ars, Op, Plb, Veratrum-al

I gave Plumbum-met. 200/3d/2 hourly and asked to continue colocynth 30 as before if not better for 24 hours. The very next day the child was completely free from pain and they have not given colocynth after the 3 powders. The case was followed for 3 weeks to observe and there was no recurrence.

The purpose of writing this case after being in homoeopathic practice for more than 2 decades is not to boast saying that I have treated surgical case with homeo medicines. The fact could be other way round also, that it may be a simple case of colic responding to plb-met.

Many of our stalwarts have treated surgical cases with homeo medicines successfully ( Homoeopathy and Surgery- Dr.P.Sankaran). I only want to say, "Sometimes you require to give equal importance to diagnosis for success."

If we observe keenly the general condition or parameters of the patient, many of the emergencies/surgical cases can be treated successfully with our homeo medicines with very little financial burden and shortest possible time. In such cases the provision of in-patient units with round the clock supervision by an expert physician will definitely eradicate wrong notions of the science of homoeopathy. Hope the day will come soon when we will have more number of Homoeo Hospitals with IPD units. There are few hospitals in India having indoor setup, i wish they should publish their success/failures for the benefit of others and equally to boost the confidence of youngsters who are preparing to start their practice to feel that--YAHI HAI RIGHT CHOICE OF MY CAREER.

we need to be very well versed with the diagnostic skills to understand the miasmatic basis of disease and our prescription for the same. Diagnosis , investigations help profoundly in the follow up of every case . Our institutions at all levals must hold fast the standards required to train the homoeopathic students. Every technique to understand patient as an individual, needs to be taught without being biased, for the betterment of the students. Once every student get to know the miasmatic follow up in a case according to hering's law, i think every case will become just a mathematics where we can understand the dynamism of disease in reducing pattern. Anyways a nice sharing.
