Creating Waves of Awareness

We must thank Ellen Page for narrating the film Vanishing of the Bees.

She wants us to make changes on our own without waiting for the government to act. Please read the many discussions to learn more about the bees and how they help sustain the planet and all our food.

The Secret Life of Bees | n Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees, 14-year-old Lily Owen, neglected by her father and isolated on their South Carolina peach farm, spends hours imagining a blissful infancy when she was loved and nurtured by her mother, Deborah, whom she barely remembers. These consoling fantasies are her heart's answer to the family story that as a child, in unclear circumstances, Lily accidentally shot and killed her mother. All Lily has left of Deborah is a strange image of a Black Madonna, with the words "Tiburon, South Carolina" scrawled on the back. The search for a mother, and the need to mother oneself, are crucial elements in this well-written coming-of-age story set in the early 1960s against a background of racial violence and unrest. When Lily's beloved nanny, Rosaleen, manages to insult a group of angry white men on her way to register to vote and has to skip town, Lily takes the opportunity to go with her, fleeing to the only place she can think of--Tiburon, South Carolina--determined to find out more about her dead mother. Although the plot threads are too neatly trimmed, The Secret Life of Bees is a carefully crafted novel with an inspired depiction of character. The legend of the Black Madonna and the brave, kind, peculiar women who perpetuate Lily's story dominate the second half of the book, placing Kidd's debut novel squarely in the honored tradition of the Southern Gothic. --Regina Marler

Keeping the Bees: Why All Bees Are At Risk and What We Can Do To Save Them by by Laurence Packer (May 2010) in honor of June 21-27 is designated as National Pollinator Week in the US by the U.S. Senate

Laurence Packer, a mettilologist (bee researcher) at York University in Toronto provides a thorough investigation into the bees and steps each of us can take to secure their survival.

We learn about their identity, their daily activities and the role they play in the environment and in the hive. Like the “canary in the coal mine” their sensitivity to changes in nature can signal and portend harmful triggers in the environment.

No one could imagine that 19,500 bee species exist in the background of our lives helping provide our harvest of foods. We know of bees buzzing and gathering pollen to make honey, but the role they play in pollination is enormous to keep our world colorful and fruitful.

This book provides a resource list of contacts and potential research projects for us to learn more about bees and how to safeguard their future. For those curious about the lives of bees, the different species, and more about pollination, this is your book.

Did you know that DNA bar coding is being developed so that anyone can take part in bee identification? We learn more about bee traits, characteristics and features every day. Wouldn't you like to contribute to this on-going research study? As a participant you will learn how to identify the different species of bees by their different traits and features.

Things that you can do to promote wild bees and help preserve them includes:

  • Grow bee friendly plants, preferably native species.
  • Provide nest sites for bees.
  • Do not use pesticides.
  • Buy organic food whenever possible.
  • Walk on the grass.
  • Encourage bee friendly practices at various governmental levels.
  • Share the films and other books that promote awareness of the plight of the honeybee
  • Get a preview of the book here

I shall leave you with the flight of the bumblebee performed by James Galway.

Thank you for this post Debby! One of the most important things in Life is to let the bees do their job. Majority of the population PROBABLY DON'T KNOW that the bees are responsible for keeping the ecosystem's balance alive. Without bees no food for us and for them. Predators may appear suddenly all across the lands. I don't think that the Jurassic Park is what people would love to see.

We must say thank you to Ellen Page who stand for our bees! Take a look at her cute face. She is so distressed, just like a bee who lost her beehive and wants to find the way back home. I think that she is "bee" type.
