It Should Not Surprise Us of This Connection Between Pollution and Reduced IQ. Here is the July 2009 article: (AP) Researchers for the first time have linked air pollution exposure before birth with lower IQ scores in childhood, bolstering evidence that smog may harm the developing brain.
The results are in a study of 249 children of New York City women who wore backpack air monitors for 48 hours during the last few months of pregnancy. They lived in mostly low-income neighborhoods in northern Manhattan and the South Bronx. They had varying levels of exposure to typical kinds of urban air pollution, mostly from car, bus and truck exhaust.
At age 5, before starting school, the children were given IQ tests. Those exposed to the most pollution before birth scored on average four to five points lower than children with less exposure
The article goes on to say that it is not such a high dose of pollution that is required. Low level pollution effects the fetal development as well. In fact, there is a correlation to the effects of lead - a heavy metal - to these outcomes.
In addition, pollutions can increase risk of fetal abnormalities and cancer. Please see discussion on shortened umbilical cord and velamentous cord insertion by Kaviraj. No matter how we pollute our environment, whether by spewing excess particles in the atmosphere, poisoning the earth and water ways, or changing the genetic make up of our foods, we are effecting our growth and development.
We know that pollutants are absorbed by certain organs and the disastrous effects that occur.
It is interesting to note the article points out that the researchers took into account other factors that could influence IQ, including secondhand smoke exposure, the home learning environment and air pollution exposure after birth, and still found a strong influence from prenatal exposure.
EFFECTS OF SMOKING
Even a dummy knows that smoking, in essence exposure to air pollutants, has a plethora of effects on the unborn developing fetus. I don't really think it takes a scientific study to know these facts. But, if that is what it takes for people to act on their innate knowledge then it's time to do something about the situation.
We can bring all the facts to the table, but what does government propose to do about the situation? Do we know where these pollutants stem? Yes. It is carried in the atmosphere from state-to-state and country-to-country. This way everyone can blame someone else.
Let us clean up our own back yard first. At least this is something we can do.
Did you know that this website is an ADVOCACY SITE?
I may have to repeat myself over and over again.
What I really want to do [of course, not hit you over the head to wake you up] is to provide training sessions to teach some social action. Who would like to get involved, get off your seat, no complacency, stand up and be counted? It's going to cost you. I will tell you that right now. Why? Because it is worth the investment in your lives, in our lives, in our community and the world.
Here's an innovative solution:
Create neighborhood schools where cars are off-limits, no buses, no traffic. Raise the level of health with walking and biking to class.
