Lots of people suffer with the occasional crisis of confidence, but for some people, lacking confidence almost becomes ingrained in their personality. Self-confident people have a positive and realistic perception of themselves and their abilities, whereas people who lack self-confidence generally feel inferior to others and are doubtful of their self-worth. They tend to isolate themselves and over-conform because they mistrust their own judgment and abilities.
People who suffer from a lack of self-confidence often hamper their own progress in life by not attempting to try anything new. If the lack is severe, sufferers will not try to succeed in anything because they think they will fail if they do. They suffer severely from feelings of inferiority to others around them. Some people with confidence issues are secretly aware that they have potential ability, but refuse to acknowledge it, thereby avoiding the risk of failure.

What causes a lack of self-confidence?
-Setting unrealistic goals.
-Past experience of failure.
-Negative life experiences growing up.
-Loss of a partner or family member through death or divorce.
-Dwelling on unhappy experiences.
-Experiencing too much pressure from other people.
-Dramatizing the result of circumstances as being much worse than they actually are.

Other ways to help your self-confidence
  • Start thinking positively about yourself. Make a list of all your positive traits - ask a friend to help. You’ll be positively surprised at how many great characteristics you have!
  • Change your self-talk. Your inner critic is much harsher on you than it is on anyone else. Speak kindlier to yourself. Next time you start to self-criticize, think “would I be this critical of a friend in the same circumstances?” The answer is likely to be “no” every time!
  • Don’t set the bar too high for yourself. Instead, set goals that are realistic and you’ll be able to meet them easier. This will increase your self-confidence.
  • Give yourself credit for all the good things you do and achieve.
  • Know that you can’t be good at everything. Sometimes other people are better at things than you are, that’s just life. When this occurs, it helps to remember that you excel in other areas.
  • Look at your strengths not your weaknesses. Every time you dwell on a weakness, think of something positive about yourself to counteract it.
  • Be assertive. Express your feelings and needs to your colleagues, friends and family politely, yet assertively. Learning to say “no” is a key part of this process. If you have trouble saying “no” please read our article “saying no”.
  • Act as if you’re confident. If you move around like a confident person, you’ll soon start feeling like a confident person.Our physicality has a strong effect on our mental wellbeing. Even if the feeling confident bit takes some time, at least you’ll be projecting a confident image to other people!
  • Take a self-assertiveness class. Most urban areas have some kind of assertiveness or self- confidence course available. The good thing about going to one is that you not only develop the skills to help you in life, but you also get to meet other people who struggle with a lack of self confidence.

Anacardium is the most prominent remedy for lack of self-confidence, the other major remedy being Baryta carbonica. Here it is important to comment that the symptom which is depicted with the highest degree in the Repertory does not always have to be depicted to such a degree in the individual. In both of these remedies an inferiority complex will be apparent; on comparison, however, they are completely different. 

Baryta carbonica will manifest an inferiority complex from the very beginning of life, childhood, to the end of life. Baryta carbonica does not want to become a grown-up with responsibilities; she feels that it is too much for her and wants to remain protected, like a child. She feels that she cannot undertake and accomplish anything. Baryta carbonica very frequently corresponds to those elderly people who simultaneously lose their mental powers and their self-confidence. Baryta carbonica is also very soft, timid, and very irresolute.

Anacardium also has great irresolution, but these people are not soft; they are hard people. There is a hardness inside them which prevents their yielding to their suffering, prevents their giving in to the urge to escape a conflict-ridden situation. They will tell of tremendous suffering; e.g., that their husband hits them or curses at them, etc., but they will endure it with the intention of proving themselves. Their inferiority complex prevents them from seeking a better situation, from establishing a new relationship, new job, etc..

Anacardium persons want to prove themselves. One can see a somewhat similar dynamic when observing Anacardium persons arguing. They are prone to foolishly prolong a losing argument despite their obviously weak, uninformed position. This kernel of hardness expands with time to affect the entire organism. These people become increasingly hard in order to cope with their life circumstances. To others they appear strong, uncompromising, unyielding and hard. Eventually the hardness can reach the point of cruelty.


Gelsemium, often known as yellow jasmine, is often used in homeopathic remedies for lower-level anxiety situations such as public speaking, stress when facing a test or presenting a meeting to members of the board. Such anxiety is often known as "the jitters" and may include symptoms such as headache, apprehension and mild trembling. Gelsemium contains alkaloids that help depress activity to the nervous system, offering a sedative effect on the body. Use caution when taking any homeopathic remedy.


Lycopodium, also known as Lyc, may help relieve anxiety attacks caused by self-doubt or lack of confidence, according to The herb may be prescribed for those suffering anxiety attacks caused by general anxiety disorders that produce symptoms like upset stomach, accelerated heart rate, trembling and sweating, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Lycopodium is believed to help reduce such anxiety and restore a sense of security and self-esteem.


Pulsatilla, commonly known as Puls, is designed to help treat individuals who experience constant self-doubt or anxiety or insecurity. Common symptoms to such anxiety may include those who experience insomnia, need constant support and attention and weepiness or frequent bouts of crying. Children with separation anxiety or clinginess may benefit from pulsatilla remedies, however consult your pediatrician before giving your child this remedy.


Also known as Silica, silicea is often prescribed for those experiencing brief bouts of anxiety caused by momentary lack of self-confidence or shyness, according to Healing with Homeopathy. Individuals may exhibit extreme anxiety when asked to speak in front of others, when attending interviews or arriving at a new job. For individuals experiencing performance anxiety, silicea helps calm nerves and restore balance. Since homeopathic remedies are not regulated, use caution when taking them.
