Anti-oxidants may increase diabetes risk

VICTORIA, Australia, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Anti-oxidants may help fight aging but Australian researchers suggest they may also increase diabetes risk.

The report, published in Cell Metabolism, found mice with a deficiency that prevented them from eliminating physiological reactive oxygen species -- free radicals linked to aging -- did not become insulin resistant on a high-fat diet as they otherwise would have. When those animals were given an anti-oxidant that fights those reactive oxygen species, those benefits were lost, leaving the mice with more signs of diabetes.

The researchers suggest low levels of reactive oxygen species -- in particular hydrogen peroxide -- might protect against diabetes by improving the body's response to insulin signals.

"Our studies indicate that 'physiological' low levels of reactive oxygen species may promote the insulin response and attenuate insulin resistance early in the progression of type 2 diabetes, prior to overt obesity and hyperglycemia," study leader Tony Tiganis of Monash University, Victoria, Australia, said in a statement. But there is now mounting evidence that the situation is not as straightforward as it may seem, and like many things in biology, it is all about balance, and that small amounts of seemingly harmful substances actually play vital roles in preserving health.

Every new study with mice makes the scientific world retrace their steps moving backwards and forwards. Telling people to do this or that. Take this or don't take that and every week it is something else.

I personally believe in fresh fruits and vegetables and lately have started taking Vitamin D.

We need to have clear measures that people can take to reduce the propensity to diabetes. Common sense such as reduce weight, get regular exercise and eat less sugar and processed white foods.

Yes Debby, it is quite normal in modern pharmaceuticals to claim good effect of a specific formulation on human body, one day and then retreat showing adverse effect of the same medicine, after using the same years together.

In old days, there was wide spread use of iodochlorohydroxyquinoline, and after years, they claimed, that it can cause harm to optical nerves.

Similarly, Bevacizumab is the generic name for the widely used Genetech cancer drug marketed as Avastin. It inhibits tumor growth by blocking angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels. But according to an article just published in the June edition of The Lancet Oncology, cancer patients treated with Avastin in combination with chemotherapy are at a heightened risk of experiencing a potentially catastrophic side effect. In fact, it's a side effect that could kill them before their malignancy does -- a gastrointestinal (GI) perforation (a hole in the wall of the stomach, small intestine or large bowel).APC( Aspirin, Phenacetin, caffeine), after continuous consumption for years was discontinued, for the bad effects on GI tract.

There are many more instances.
